The Lagos State congress of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has been cancelled.
This followed the violence that broke out at the venue of the congress at the popular Tafawa Balewa Square, Lagos Island.
Daily Trust learnt that voting was about to commence when some thugs allegedly invaded the venue and disrupted the exercise.
As a result of the melee, the electoral committee chairman, Engr. Johnson Abounu, announced the cancellation of the congress.
However, the party through a statement by its outgoing publicity Secretary, Taofik Gani, blamed the ruling APC in the state for the botched congress
He said the PDP was having a unity Congress with all interests converged at TBS when the disruption happened.
“The chairman of the committee had started giving out ballot papers to the delegates to go start voting when suddenly Gun shots were heard at different angles.
“The delegates were orderly until after the gunshots which scared a lot to leave the venue. We do not believe these gun shots came from PDP members. The shooters can only be our Political opponents. We charge the Police to fish out these persons.”
The chairman of the Election Committee has gone ahead to declare the Congress as aborted and a new date to be announced,” Gani added.
