The Lagos State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) yesterday alleged that Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s first term in office was characterised by a high rate of poverty and unemployment.

The governor, in his second-term inauguration speech on Monday, claimed that he met the expectations of the people in his first term.

But the PDP, in a statement by its spokesman in the state, Hakeem Amode, dismissed the claim, saying the governor performed poorly in his first term.

Amode said, “We wonder if Governor Sanwo-Olu is referring to the state’s poverty rate he met at 4.5 percent in 2019, which is now 8.5 percent, according to NBS data, or the unemployment rate he has taken to 37.16 percent from the 14.6 percent when he came into office in 2019.

“Just like many residents of the state, we in the Lagos State chapter of the PDP, have been monitoring the performance of the governor since 2019 and we are convinced that he has failed the people of the state on all fronts.”

He further said that compared to his predecessors, “It is obvious that Governor Sanwo-Olu is not ready for governance, no doubt the people rejected him at the poll and the court will soon prove us right on this.”

But the Lagos APC through its Publicity Secretary, Seye Oladejo, disagreed with PDP, saying the governor “earned his second term ticket on the back of compelling landmark achievements, passionate commitment to the yearnings of teeming Lagosians and the fulfillment of his social contract with the electorate.

“His much-anticipated re-election was a referendum on his performance which endeared him to all and sundry across socio-economic status and cultural leanings.”
