The President of Lagos Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Mrs. Nike Akande, has implored the federal government to consider more protection and economic empowerment for women who are displaced on account of conflicts in the country.

Akande, who made the plea yesterday in a statement to mark the 2017 International Women’s Day, said her position was premised on the fact that various Internally Displaced Persons’ (IDPs) camps are populated largely by women and children.

“We appreciate the efforts of government and humanitarian organizations in alleviating their plights.  But evidently, a lot more needs to be done to bring normalcy to their lives.

“We urge the government, corporate bodies, and individuals to scale up their support for the IDPs in all parts of the country”.

Akande also emphasised the need for accelerating gender parity, reflection on progress made, as well as call for change and to celebrate acts of courage and determination by ordinary women who have played an extraordinary role in the history of Nigeria.
