Lagos BRT goes cashless with cowry card

The Bus Rapid Transport (BRT)

The Managing Director of Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA), Abimbola Akinajo has disclosed that fare collection on bus services offered by Primero Transport Services Limited, will from February 1, 2021 henceforth be through the use of the State Travel card known as Cowry Card.

Akinajo in a statement signed by the Assistant Director, Corporate Communication, Mr. Kolwole Ojelabi noted that Primero Transport Services Limited, operators of the Ikorodu to TBS Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) will commence use of cowry cards.

While she emphasized that the use of the cowry card will henceforth be the only mode of fare payment and administration of regulated transport services in the state; she noted that it is currently in use on the Oshodi to Abule Egba BRT system.

The use of the card had become imperative, following the launch of the expanded e-ticketing system by Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu in August 2020.

She further said the agency will launch a community bus scheme, First Mile and Last Mile (FMLM) Scheme, as a feeder system to transport services on the main transport corridors.

It will use the cowry card which will also be extended to other transport services including water and rail transportation next year.
