Hundreds of Governor Akinwunmi Ambode’s supporters on Monday besieged the secretariat of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ikeja, protesting against the guidelines set by the National Working Committee (NWC) of the party for the primaries in Lagos state.
The protesters stormed the secretariat at about 4:30pm, few hours before the monitoring committee assigned to conduct the gubernatorial primary arrived for its stakeholders’ meeting.
A leader of the protesting group, Kolawole Okedara, alleged that the party’s executive was hoarding the identification cards, a requirement they must possess to be allowed to participate in the primary process.
He said since they have decided to hoard the cards, they must allow everyone that could present the identification slip to cast their votes for aspirants of their choice.
“If they don’t allow that, then there will not be any election. We have registered since 2014 but the party didn’t issue any card to us. And when the primaries arrived, they claimed the identification card that wasn’t issued months before today will be used for the primaries. This isn’t fair at all,” he said.
