Lagos $11m cancer centre takes off in May – LUTH CMD

The Chief Medical Director (CMD) of the Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH) Prof Chris Bode has said that the $11 million new NSCIA LUTH cancer treatment centre will be open to the public on May 1, 2019.

He stated this today during the visit of the Acting Director of the United States trade and development agency, Mr Thomas Hardy and his delegation to the new cancer centre in Lagos.

The new facility has state-of-the-art equipment for treating and managing cancer such as one CT simulator, a brachytherapy machine, two installed tele-therapy machines and one under installation.

The CMD assured the delegation that the machines will perform optimally for the next 10 years as payment has been made for maintenance, routine services and breakdowns.

He noted that once the machines are functioning in May, it will reduce medical tourism, adding that the services at the new centre will be cheaper and more affordable than travelling abroad for cancer treatment.

After touring the facility, Hardy said, “I have never seen something so beautiful. The equipment are top of the line and it is going to be useful to the populace.”

“With the last machine, we are treating over a hundred patients a day, now, with these latest machines, we should attend to over 300 patients daily,” said Oke.
