Lack of adequate and regular training for security operatives manning Nigeria’s borders is responsible for arms’ proliferation, human rights abuses and other problems in the country.
Executive Director, Africa Youth Growth Foundation, Arome Salifu, said this at a press briefing in Abuja.

He said his organization was partnering with the police, the NDLEA, the Immigration, Customs and the Civil Defence for proper training of their officers.
Salifu said over 300 officers of the listed agencies would be trained how to stop arms proliferation, human rights issues and others at Seme Border in Southwest, Jibiya border in Northwest and Nfum borders in South-South.
He said: “We see a knowledge gap in our assessment that often, people are posted to the borders to go and man the borders but without a clear understanding of the rights of migrants. Human rights are often traded.
“It’s one thing to balance the security of territorial integrity of the country, and on the other side to ensure that the rights of the people you are supposed to protect and respect are not trampled upon or undermined.”
