The Joint Labour Movement in Kwara State has asked the state government to implement N35,000 wage award for all categories of state workers.

The union said the demand was to mitigate the hardship resulting from the fuel subsidy removal by the Federal Government.

The labour movement said it was constrained to remind the state government due to its refusal to attend to the demands of the workers in the state.

The request was contained in a joint statement issued in Ilorin and signed by the state chairmen of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Comrade Murtala Saheed Olayinka; Trade Union Congress (TUC), Comrade Tunde Joseph; and the Joint Negotiation Council (JNC) Comrade Saliu Oluwole.

They said the demand was in line with the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) reached between the Federal Government and the organised labour after the removal of fuel subsidy.

The statement called on the state government to domesticate and implement the 40 per cent peculiar allowance for workers across the state as approved and provided for workers under federal employment.

The labour movement also demanded the implementation of consequential adjustment for pensioners and weigh-in allowances for workers in the state-owned media houses, who this week embarked on a two-day warning strike to demand for better welfare.

The statement further pleaded with the state government to pay local government workers outstanding arrears and look into the outstanding arrears of promotion for 2021, 2022, and 2023 of all categories of workers in the state.

The NLC chairman confirmed the content of the release in a chat with our correspondent on Friday. “We have notified the office of the governor on the matter.

When contacted, the Commissioner for Communication, Bola Olukoju, however told Daily Trust on Friday that he wasn’t aware of latest developments. “I have not been officially notified on their latest position, but I will respond later when I receive it,” Olukoju added.
