Kwara woman kills self to ‘stop husband from marrying second wife’

A mother of two in Kwara State, Yetunde Folorunsho, has allegedly poisoned herself to stop her husband, Dare Araoje, from marrying another wife.

The deceased said to be a Linguistics graduate of the University of Ilorin, allegedly died at the General Hospital, Ilorin on Monday.

An online post by one Oyeronke Oluwakemi, who claimed to be her coursemate, had alleged that she was poisoned by the mother-in-law over disagreement with her religious status being a Christian.

However, some residents told City & Crime that she poisoned herself over a disagreement that her husband wants to marry a second wife as Muslim.

But speaking on the issue, her husband’s brother, Alhaji Lagbe Araoje, said she poisoned herself shortly after a ‘mild quarrel’ with her husband.

“On Monday, around 10am, she had a little quarrel with the husband outside the house and it was settled and she went inside. The husband even later gave her the phone that she requested.

“Some minutes later, the husband rushed out of the house crying for help that his wife was vomiting. On our way to the hospital, she was begging the husband for forgiveness that she had taken DDT powder popularly known as a sniper.

“She died in the hospital around 12pm,” he added.

Also speaking, the husband of Hajia Nimahtallahi, who operates the chemist where she allegedly bought the sniper, Adio Tajudeen, confirmed the purchase of the substance from his wife by the late Yetunde.

“It was when the news of her death broke that we knew she was living in the neighbourhood. People buy the power for many reasons and we can’t suspect it will be used for evil purposes.”

The Police Public Relations Officer of the Kwara State command, Ajayi Okasanmi, said the matter is being investigated.

“A case of murder was reported by a brother to the husband. But we are still investigating because there are insinuations of homicide. We have invited all the parties and deposited her corpse for an autopsy to unravel the circumstances of her death,” Okasanmi added.
