The Kwara State Government has threatened imprisonment against environmental violators, especially those who dump refuse or display wares indiscriminately.
The Commissioner for Environment, Mallam Shehu Ndanusa Usman, who disclosed this during a courtesy call on the Oniganmo of Ganmo, Oba Kamaldeen Jimoh Akanbi, said the visit was an advocacy to sensitise the people of the community in Ifelodun LGA on the dangers of such actions.
He noted that it was an offence punishable under environmental laws for marketers to display wares on pedestrian paths, medians and any other area that inhibited both vehicular and people’s movements.
He stressed that, “Indiscriminate dumping of refuse on pedestrian paths, medians and any other unapproved dump sites will attract fines or imprisonment.”
In his response, Oba Kamaldeen pledged the community’s support at achieving sanity in the market place and a healthy environment in the state.
