The Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN) Kwara State Chapter, has announced that the recently completed Secretariat will be named after Super Eagles and Nottingham Forest of England striker, Taiwo Awoniyi.
The decision was in recognition of the former Golden Eaglets striker’s ‘significant contributions to sports development in the state and the country generally’
This decision was reached at the body’s last congress where it also urged key stakeholders to address the situation of one of its members, Rowland Olonishuwa, who has been detained over an alleged defamation case involving a commercial bank.
“We put forward a proposal to formally designate the newly constructed Kwara SWAN Secretariat in honor of the Super Eagles and Nottingham Forest striker, Taiwo Awoniyi, in appreciation of his role in ensuring the completion of the project.”

Regarding Olonishuwa’s case, the journalists expressed dismay at the prolonged detention of their colleagues and called for prompt and peaceful resolution through dialogue.
In the communique released by SWAN at the conclusion of the congress, the sports journalists urged the government to ensure the execution and upgrade of designated sport facilities in the state once the budget is approved.
Awoniyi was a member of the 2015 World Conquering Golden Eaglets squad.
