The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Kwara State has rejected the results of Saturday’s local government election, calling it a “desecration of democracy” and a waste of public funds.
In a statement issued on Tuesday by the party’s Publicity Secretary, Olusegun Adewara, PDP demanded the cancellation of the election and the conduct of a fresh poll.
“We will explore legal means to restore the stolen mandate of the people,” Adewara said, adding that over 85% of voters were disenfranchised across the 16 local government areas.
PDP also criticised the tribunal set up to address complaints, claiming it fell short of constitutional requirements. The party called for a new tribunal to be headed by a high court judge.
On Sunday, the Kwara State Independent Electoral Commission (KWSIEC) declared the All Progressives Congress (APC) the winner in all 16 councils.
