Kwara okays Hijab for female students, warns troublemakers

Kwara State Government has reaffirmed the use of the hijab by willing Muslim schoolgirls in all categories of public schools in the state.

This came on the heels of the fresh crisis that had erupted in the state over the issue.

Some female Muslim students of Baptist High School, Ijagbo were allegedly denied access to the school by the authority for their refusal to remove their hijabs.

The development attracted concerns from the Muslim community especially coming after the crisis witnessed in the state last year over a similar issue.

The Commissioner for Education and Human Capital Development, Hajia Sa’adatu Madibbo Kawu, at a peace meeting between Muslim and Christian stakeholders in Ijagbo, Oyun Local Government Area, warned that the state would not tolerate any attempt to disrupt the peace in the state.

“The policy statement of the Kwara State Government allowing willing Muslim schoolgirl to wear the hijab in all public schools, including grant-aided ones, is binding.

“This conforms to the judicial pronouncements of the courts of law and the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria,” she said.

She appealed to Muslim and Christian leaders to allow peace to reign in the state.

She directed the school’s heads to immediately implement the policy statement on the use of approved hijab in public schools.
