Kwara loses music icon, Jaigbade Alao

An Ilorin-based music icon, Alhaji Jaigbade Alao, also known as The King of Music, has died.

He died in the early hours of Monday according to a statement by his family.

It was gathered that he died shortly after complaining of a slight headache.

While speaking with our correspondent, one of his sons, AbdulRazaq, said “He was not sick but only complained of a slight headache this morning and died suddenly before we could get him to the hospital.

AbdulRazaq said the deceased is survived by four wives and 34 children. Some family members said he was 121 years old.

He was buried Monday afternoon according to Islamic injunctions in Jaigbade’s compound, along Ita Merin area of Ilorin West LGA of Kwara State.

Last year, the celebrated music legend visited the Emir of Ilorin, Alhaji Ibrahim Sulu-Gambari, over his decision to retire after spending over 80 years singing. He told the emir that he started his music career in 1940.

He was a favourite of many and renowned for his unique style of music (Dadakuada) with captivating performances that won the hearts of many music enthusiasts.

His contributions to the Nigerian music industry is immeasurable and will be missed by his family, friends, and fans. He has travelled to many continents including Europe and America among others.
