A 53-year-old civil servant in Kwara State, Oyawoye Olajumoke Fafemi, has been arraigned before a Federal High Court sitting in Ilorin, for allegedly defrauding 23 church members seeking employment.

Fafemi, a staff of Kwara State Ministry of Finance, was charged by the EFCC on a four-count charge bordering on employment and Hajj pilgrimage scam.

According to the charge sheet, the suspect collected various sums of money from 23 members of the Christ Apostolic Church in Offa, under the guise of helping them secure employment in the Kwara State Civil Service Commission and some federal government parastatals.

“Between the month of April and September 2019, she obtained N2m from one Moronfoye Solomon Daramola to secure government employment for his church members.

“Between the month of May and August, 2019, you obtained the sum of N700,000 from one Adeoti Kamoru under the pretense that you will secure hajj pilgrimage visa for him,” two of the charges also read.

The commission said the letters the suspect issued stating that her victims had been employed by Kwara State governments showing their grades and salaries were later discovered to be fake.

Fafemi pleaded not guilty when the charges were read to her.

EFCC counsel, Andrew Akoja, urged the court to give a trial date to enable the prosecution to prove its case.

Defence counsel, A. T. Yusuf, however, prayed the court to grant his client bail pending the hearing and determination of the case.

Justice Sani granted Fafemi bail in the sum of N2m and adjourned the matter to November 17 for commencement of trial.
