Komolafe to head new upstream petroleum commission

The Managing Director, Nigeria Pipeline & Storage Company (NPSC), Engr. Gbenga Komolafe, has been named as the pioneer Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the newly created Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC).

The new NUPRC was created via the new Petroleum Industry Act 2021 (PIA) and shall be responsible for the technical and commercial regulation of upstream petroleum operations including crude oil production.

According to his profile, Komolafe, a 57-year-old engineer from Ondo State has had several leadership roles in the oil and gas sector with three academic degrees in law, industrial and labour relations.

At NPSC, a subsidiary of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), he was said to have initiated a business model for maintenance and operations of NNPC pipelines and depots through a private Joint Venture (JV).

He was Group General Manager, Special Duties at NNPC, Group General Manager, Crude Oil Marketing Division and Executive Director (Commercial), Pipelines and Petroleum Marketing Company (PPMC), among others.

In a comment on Komolafe’s appointment, a public affairs analyst, Mr Aliyu Galadima, said, “The industry has ample records of how Komolafe’s steering of various downstream regulatory agencies yielded reforms that facilitated efficiency and attendant huge monetary value for Nigeria.”
