Leaders of Kogi West Senatorial district of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) have called for immediate release of Senator Dino Melaye who is currently in custody of the Nigerian Police over alleged murder attempt.
The PDP leaders made the call in a communique issued at the end of their meeting held over the weekend at Iyah-Gbedde, Ijumu Local Government.
The communique signed by the PDP Chairman for Kogi West Senatorial District Taiwo Kola-Ojo, called for Melaye’s immediate release, and his safety under police custody considering allegations of past attempts made on the senator’s life.
The party leadership had earlier condemned the siege on the Abuja residence of the senator, and his eventual arrest by the police in a “most dehumanising way”.
The party also vowed to continue mobilising support for Melaye’s victory in the February 16 National Assembly election notwithstanding his current ordeal which it blamed on the ruling APC, allegedly working in cahoots with the police to silence the senator.
The PDP leadership in the zone expressed fears that the ruling APC was out for violence and intimidation of opposition members in the state and across the country to achieve electoral victory in the 2019 elections.
The party leaders pointed out that the burning of Melaye’s billboards, violence and threats to life and property were sending wrong signals ahead of the forthcoming election.
