Kogi village chiefs, ward heads decry poor salary

The forum of village chiefs/ward heads in Kogi Local Government Council of Kogi State have lamented over their poor monthly salary and wages given to them by the local government.

The spokesman for the forum, Malam Haruna Ibrahim, who is also the Ohinoyi of Okete, stated this when he led a delegation of the village chiefs/wards on a courtesy call to the newly-elected chairman of the local government council, Alhaji Isah Abdulkarim Sani, in his office yesterday.

He told the chairman that the monthly salary given to the village chiefs and ward heads by the local government over the years was too meager and appealed to him to increase their salary.

Ibrahim, who is the vice chairman of the forum, said increasing the village chiefs and ward head’s salary will enable them to discharge their day to day activities more effectively.

According to him, the forum decided to pay a courtesy visit to the chairman in order to congratulate him on his victory during the local government election in the area.

The forum also commended the local government chairman for his efforts in tackling incessant activities of armed bandits, kidnappings and cattle rustling in the area when he was special assistant to Kogi State Government on security.

“The forum also wishes to commend your efforts towards tackling cases of kidnappings, armed banditry, cattle rustling, which has a serious threat to lives and property of our subjects when you were appointed as special assistant to the state government on security,” he said.

He said the intervention of the local government chairman in the area of security has brought some peace presently being enjoyed across the local government.

Responding, the chairman, Alhaji Isah Abdulkarim Sani, thanked them for the visit, saying he was overwhelmed by the gesture.

He assured them that the local government will sit down with members of the legislative arm to deliberate in order to see how their monthly wages and other welfare will be reviewed.

He, however, expressed his administration’s determination to give priority to the issue of security, to enhance the protection of lives and property of entire residents of the council.

The chairman, therefore, solicited for the support and cooperation of traditional rulers, village and community leaders especially in tackling the challenges of insecurity.
