The Vice Chancellor of the Kogi State University (KSU), Kabba, Prof. Kehinde Eniola has said the institution is being streamlined and nurtured to produce a high standard education that will be valuable to the society, not for the sake of revenue generation.
Professor Eniola disclosed this to newsmen at the University campus, Kabba as part of activities to mark successful end of the ivory tower’s first academic calendar, “2023/2024 academic session”
He said in their attempt to enthrone a high academic standard in the state new citadel of learning, the institution has decided to strictly adhere to 170 minimum cut-off marks requirement policy for its admission against the 140 benchmark set by the Joint Admission Matriculation Board(JAMB).
The VC who added that the university should have agreed to the JAMB 140 score card to attract many students, stressed that doing so will be against the aim of the institution in setting high academic standard from the onset .
“Our motto is ‘Beating the best, to become the best”. We can only achieve that if we set a high academic standard from the onset. There are institutions that will not even admit students with less than 200 scores, even while JAMB pegged it at 140.
“Setting 170 as admission benchmark is not too high. We understand that as a new institution, we should be concerned about getting many students, but lowering our standard just to attract students will only give the school revenue, and supporting mediocrity”, said prof Eniola.
While Prof Eniola stressed further that several persons may not be in the same page with them over the admission policy of the new institution, he said the idea is to “produce high standard education we can be proud of”.
He therefore advised prospective students who could not meet up with the requirements of 170 score, but interested in the new university to apply for ‘A’ level course, (being run by the institution), for them to be given priority in the next academic session.
The VC stated further that the institution is set to admit 1,750 out of the 3,500 prospective candidates that applied for admission, particularly those who made the university their first choice for 2024/2025 academic session.
On the journey so far, Professor Eniola noted that the school has made significant progress in both academic and infrastructural development since it officially commenced academic activities on January 16, 2024.
He commended the past immediate governor of the state, Alhaji Yahaya Bello for establishing the university and the current Governor, Ahmed Usman Ododo, who he said, has not relented in funding the institution for its rapid development.
The VC stated further that the management of the institution has not rested on their oars to ease out the challenge of accommodation and transportation for both students and workers of the university.
“The institution’s management has taken delivery of 4 tricycles to ease mobility to and from the campus and more (building) projects are ongoings, which will be completed very soon “, he said .
Meanwhile, the VC chancellor thanked the Okun Development Association (ODA), North America for their support through the donation of 400 classroom chairs, including Pa Samuel who he said generously donated 100 palm seedlings, vintage furniture, and assorted stationeries to the institution.
The kogi state university, Kabba admitted a total of 1,200 students in December 2023 and officially commenced academic activities on January 16, 2024.
