Kogi State set to train 5,000 youth in skills acquisition

The Kogi State Government, on Wednesday, says it has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) that would enable 5,000 youths from across the 21 local government areas of the state receive skills acquisition training at the Korea International Cooperation (KOICA) Vocational Training Institute in Lokoja.

Kogi state governor, Alhaji Yahaya Bello stated this when he received a delegation from the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) who are on a two-day visit to the state to understudy the activities of the Kogi State Youth Employment and Social Support Operations (KGYESSO).

The governor who was represented by the Secretary to the State Government, Dr Folashade Ayoade Arike, said his administration placed emphasis on poverty reduction as a collective desire towards achieving good governance.

The governor stated that his administration’s emphasis on skills acquisition was aimed at reducing rural-urban migration, youth restiveness as well as ensure that the young people are empowered to be self reliant.

DRC’s Minister for Social Inclusion and team leader of the delegation, Prof. Mughahaba John, said tackling issue of poverty called for a collaborative efforts, hence their visit to Nigeria and Kogi in particular to learn her success story.

Prof. Mughahaba said the 80 million population in DRC would not be safe despite the presence of some few rich persons if the vast majority are not catered for, adding that the team was in Nigeria to learn and gather knowledge that would help the country do better in the fight against poverty.
