Kogi State governor, Alhaji Yahaya Bello has donated two flying boats to Girinya, a riverine community in Kogi Local Government Area of the state to ease their transportation problem.
Commissioner for Solid Minerals in the state, Engr Abubakar Bashir Gegu, who made the presentation on behalf of the governor, said the gesture was in fulfillment of the appeal by the traditional ruler of the community for the provision of engine boats for the use of his people.
The gesture, according to the governor was part of his administration’s commitment to easing the transportation problems faced by people of riverine communities in the area in moving their farm produce to the market.
North Central Trust reports that Girinya is surrounded by about 17 villages that experience annual flooding.
According to Bello, the boats would facilitate the quick evacuation of the victims of flooding to safer grounds as well as support fishing activities in which the area is renowned.
