The Correspondents Chapel of the Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ), Kebbi Council, has rejected the decision of the Kebbi State government to give only three correspondents accreditation to cover Governor Nasiru Idris’s activities at the Government House, Birnin Kebbi.
The rejection was sequel to a meeting held in Birnin Kebbi on Tuesday between the Acting Permanent Secretary, Government House, Alhaji Ibrahim Saraki; Acting Permanent Secretary, Protocol, Alhaji Sagir Mahe, and Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Malam Yahaya Sarki, Alhaji Aliyu Bandado, the Special Adviser to Gov. Idris on New Media and Master of Ceremony to the Governor, Alhaji Faruk Bello-Birnin Kebbi where they resolved that the governor had directed that only three journalists cover his activities at the chambers of the government house.
Chairman of the Correspondents Chapel, Alhaji El-Yakubu Usman-Dabai described the development as’ counterproductive’ to the practice of journalism and an infringement on their fundamental right to hold the government accountable.
