Kebbi gov, Bagudu, Dakingari, Malami meet over LG poll

Governor Nasir Idris, Minister of Budget and Economic Planning, Abubakar Atiku Bagudu, former Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami, and other leaders of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Kebbi State held a summit to strategise for the local government election scheduled for August 31.

The meeting, presided over by Governor Idris, included notable personalities such as former Governor Sa’idu Dakingari, Minister of State for Education, Dr. Tanko Yusuf Sununu, and General Muhammadu Magoro (retd).

It would be recalled that the ruling APC had suffered a major internal crisis in the state prior to the 2023 general elections, leading to the exit of former governor and current senator for Kebbi Central, Adamu Aliero, and a former Majority Leader of the Senate, Abdullahi Yahaya. The crisis had led to the loss suffered by the party in the presidential election, while seats in the National Assembly were split with the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). Governor Idris also emerged victorious with less than 50,000 votes of his PDP counterpart.

With the local government poll coming as the first major election in the state since the 2023 general elections, many observers have predicted that the PDP would be hoping to consolidate on its last outing, especially taking advantage of the prevailing economic and security challenges.

Speaking to journalists after the closed-door meeting, Governor Idris said the summit was organised to plan for the APC’s success in the upcoming local government election in the state.

He expressed confidence in the APC’s strength in Kebbi State and assured that his administration was prepared to secure victory in all the chairmanship seats and 225 councilorship positions across the state’s 21 local government areas in a free and fair election.
