The Kebbi Development Forum (KDF) has expressed concern over the consensus arrangement reached by the state chapter of the APC in choosing its governorship and other candidates in the state.
While addressing journalists at its secretariat in Birnin Kebbi, the Secretary General of KDF, Alhaji Usman Abubakar called on the national leadership of APC to call the party in Kebbi to order and stick to its direct primaries policy to give a level playing ground to all aspirants in the state.
Abubakar said the decision to adopt direct primaries for the presidency and allow states to choose between direct and indirect options was not only self-serving but against principles of fairness, equity and justice.
“Why are our leaders afraid of direct primaries? Why can’t they follow the footsteps of President Muhammadu Buhari if they truly hold his principles?” he asked.
He said the idea of choosing the incumbent governor and other elective officers through consensus would give “unpatriotic elements” the cover to perpetrate poor governance.
“We therefore condemn in strong terms any attempt by political parties to narrow the recruitment process to giving an edge to charlatans,” he said.
