Kebbi flooding: NEMA seeks stakeholders’ collaboration

The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has called for collaboration of the state and federal governments with local authorities, HYPPADEC and traditional rulers as 14 local government areas of Kebbi State are prone to flood mitigation this year.

This is coming just as the Managing Director of the Hydroelectric Power Producing Areas Development Commission (HYPPADEC), Abubakar Sadiq Yelwa on Sunday, at a stakeholders’ meeting on the flood mitigation, in Birnin Kebbi called on the authorities of the affected local government areas, state governments, relevant agencies and traditional rulers to come up with suggestions, action plan and projects that could limit the flood mitigation as the commission was ready to fund them.

The NEMA Zonal Head for Sokoto, Kebbi and Zamfara, Alhaji Aliyu Shehu said the perennial flooding being witnessed in Kebbi was caused by River Niger, River Rima and River Zamfara  because they allowed huge body of waters into the state, thereby wreaking havoc in many communities when they overflowed their banks during rainy season.
