Kebbi State government has gone spiritual as part of its effort to fight banditry and other crimes among the people of the state particularly Fulani herders.
A 65-man committee of Islamic preachers consisting mainly of Fulani speakers, was constituted with the aim of enlightening the herders on the ills of banditry and other crimes.

The new measure is aimed at reaching out to the herders on Islam’s injunction against engaging in any form crime.
Speaking to Caliphate Trust, the chairman of the committee, Asheikh Abdullahi Mamman Sheme, said after a brainstorming, it was realised that apart from the use of drugs and other forms of influences, ignorance of Islamic teachings also played a major role in the involvement of herders in crimes.
Asheikh Sheme, who is also the Modibbo of Gwandu, said though the preaching programme was planned to be a continuous exercise, it would be conducted in phases.
According to him, the first phase is expected to last for three months while the second phase would take off after the Ramadan fast.
He added that the preaching would commence as soon as the committee finished its consultations with the Ardos (Fulani leaders), which would enable them to determine the number of Fulani settlements to be reached per period.
He said membership of the committee also included preachers from other tribes in the state.
“Majority of the members of the committee are Fulfulde speaking preachers. The emphasis on Fulfulde speaking preachers is for the purpose of effective communication as the target for the preaching is mainly Fulani herders.
“After every three months, the committee will review its activities to ascertain the level of success,” he said.
