Katsina embarks on fumigation of ponds and drainages

Speaking with Daily Trust on phone, the Executive Secretary of SEPA, Alhaji Lawal Charanchi, said the exercise was informed by the alarming rate of malaria infection cases caused by mosquitoes.
According to him, ponds, drainages and water ways provide the breeding places for mosquitoes and lava emphasising the need to fumigate the areas to get rid of malaria parasite.
He said the programme, earlier restricted to few major local governments, will now cover the entire state.
“So far we have done eight local councils and we are still on the exercise, we intend to get to all the nooks and crannies of the state soon,” he said.
He said the agency observed that the raining season was the best period for the fumigation so that the dreaded insects will be killed for a better environment.
While assuring that the agency was committed to ensuring a safer environment, Chiranci commended the state government over its support to the agency.
 Some of the people who spoke expressed their appreciation with the exercise, believing it will go a long way in addressing the problem of malaria infection.
