Kaduna State Transport Regulatory Authority (KASTRA) has unfolded plans to register commercial vehicles in the state and to zone different modes of transport to particular locations.
The Director of Finance and General Services of KASTRA, Malam Lawal Usman Musa who disclosed this during a stakeholders’ meeting last Tuesday, July 13, said that the essence of the registration is to harmonise and upgrade the operations of commercial vehicles in Kaduna State.
Malam Lawal said that the registration exercise will affect all forms of commercial vehicles like buses, tricycles (Keke Napeps) and any means of commercial transport.
According to the KASTRA Director, the registration of this vehicles will restrict some commercial vehicles to selected roads which will help in curtailing accidents.
“One of the advantages of this registration is to curtail accidents on our roads because there are so many reports of accidents caused by Keke Operators due to reckless driving”, he added.
Malam Lawal said that the ‘’ exercise will give the city an urban look, as well as creating a background for a plan that the state has for the future regarding public transportation. ‘’
‘’Secondly, it will help to get the state a data base because currently in Kaduna State there is no any database with regards to public transport. Currently in Kaduna state nobody has an idea of who is plying what transport or who is supplying public transport in Kaduna”, he said.
Representatives of Kaduna State Road Agency (KADRA), National Institute of Transport Technology (NITT), Kaduna State Urban Development Agency (KASUPDA) were present at the sensitization exercise.
