Dr Bala said this during an inaugural meeting of members of the committee with the state Deputy Governor, Engineer Tijjani Mohammed Gwarzo, last Thursday in his office.

Chairman of the committee added that, the conference is aimed at identifying horticultural problems in the country as well as proffering solutions to solving them.

He noted that it was on the record that vegetables and fruit farmers were faced with the challenge of preserving their products, leading to great loss to the farmers, especially during raining seasons.

Bala added that the conference, which would bring together professionals from all sectors within and outside the country, was also aimed at improving horticultural farming in such a way that the produce would be available to the common man and be sufficient for export.

On his part, the deputy governor, Engineer Gwarzo, while inaugurating the committee, observed that the conference would be timely, while noting that the state government was ready to support the conference.

Gwarzo further pledged the state government’s commitment to providing remedy to the wastages of the farmers by putting in place modern storage facilities of horticultural products in the state, while he tasked experts in the field to come up with proposals for best storage practice so as to hasten government intervention.

Speaking earlier, the representative of Yankaba vegetable sellers and Yan Lemo fruits sellers associations, Garba Shehu, lamented the amount of losses recorded by members of the associations, saying, “the only way out is modernised storage facilities.”
