Kano State Independent Electoral Commission (KANSIEC) has on Monday announced plans to conduct local government elections on January 16th 2021.

While unveiling the approved itinerary for the January 2021 slated local government polls, KANCIEC Executive Chairman Professor Garba Ibrahim Sheka, revealed that the commission has begun preparation from Monday on processes that will ensure a hitch-free exercise.

He added that, tenure of the current elected local government’s officials will expire on the 11th of February 2021 and that it is the hope of the commission in compliance with federal government directives to ensure a handing over process that entails a hand over from the current elected leadership to another and avoid caretaker appointments.

“We have just concluded a meeting with the leadership of the political parties and we have agreed with the political parties that the next local government elections will hold on the 16th of January 2021 as the tenure of the current leadership of the councils expires on 11th February 2021,” he said.

Professor Sheka also gave the assurance that there will be no caretaker committees for the local government as the commission has commenced preparation 96 days ahead of the slated period, adding that a comprehensive detailed timetable has been provided to guide the political parties for effective participation in the elections.
