The Kano State Government, through the Ministry of Health, has urgently appealed for increased donations of essential family planning supplies, including condoms and pills, due to severe shortages in many healthcare facilities.

This appeal was made during the Family Planning and Adolescent Health First and Second Quarter Technical and Working Group (TWG) meeting organised by the Department of Public Health and Disease Control with the support of the Development Research and Projects Centre, Lafiya and other partners on Monday, May 27.

The shortages are attributed to the growing acceptance of family planning systems by many households, including those in rural areas.

An official explained, “The demand is always increasing, but the commodities are never enough for us. That’s why the ministry wishes to domesticate and adopt the national procurement guidelines to facilitate more procurement of these commodities.”

The Executive Secretary, Drugs and Medical Consumables Supply Agency (DMCSA) for the Ministry, Pharmacist Ghali Sule, stated that the state government has increased its budget for child spacing commodities compared to last year.

He also emphasized the government’s efforts to partner with more stakeholders to ensure these commodities are accessible to all.

As the TWG validated new procurement guidelines, it also resolved to seek additional funding sources.

The group acknowledged that relying solely on federal government donations is unsustainable for the continued procurement of these essential commodities.

Similarly in his remarks, the Director of Public Health and Disease Control, Dr. Imam Wada Bello, also gave assurance that once the new guideline is adopted, the state government will not hesitate to procure more commodities.
