Kano school remains shut as govt receives Sodomy report

The Kano State government has directed that the Hassan Ibrahim Gwarzo Boys Secondary School should remain closed pending the outcome of a security report on alleged sexual assault on some students of the school.
This is coming two months after the setting up of a 14-man committee headed by a former Vice Chancellor of the University of Maiduguri, Professor Abubakar Mustapha.
The Commissioner for Information, Alhaji Muhammad Garba, told newsmen in Kano  after an executive council meeting yesterday that the state government had received the report of the committee set up on October 30 to investigate the allegation.
He said the decision was part of the committee’s recommendations and that government would stick to it to enable security agencies conclude their investigation.
“Government felt it is necessary to allow security agencies complete their investigation before a final decision is taken,” he said.
He said government had approved the release of N40million to relocate 73 SS3 students of the school to three private schools for their WAEC, NECO and JAMB examinations.
The commissioner said the students would be relocated to Andal Science Academy, Turkish College and Akilu Comprehensive College, Madobi. The father of one of the affected students who pleaded anonymity said parents of the affected students were doubtful about the findings of the committee and the commitment of government on the matter.
“First, we are not satisfied with the way the committee conducted its findings because we were the last group invited by the committee. Secondly, because of the shoddy work it conducted, the report was rejected by government and pledged to conduct fresh one,” he said.
He lamented that since the government took over the case, only one mother of the affected students was invited.
It would be recalled that in early October, the state government shut down the school and set up a 14-man committee to investigate the matter.
It was given two weeks to submit its report to the government. However, prior to the expiration of the two weeks, it requested for an additional week and government granted the request.
