The Kano State chapter of the Rice Farmers Association of Nigeria (RIFAN) has engaged 25 diploma students for the Federal Government’s Anchor Borrower Programme (ABP) aimed at encouraging youth involvement in agricultural activities and boosting rice production in the state.
Announcing this to newsmen in Kano, the RIFAN state chapter Chairman, Alhaji Abubakar Haruna Aliyu, said the youths were beneficiaries of the programme, as well as operated as extension workers by assisting farmers in adopting best farming practices.
Alhaji Abubakar added that the association’s resolve to engage the youths was influenced by the need for effective national food security, as well as the sustainability of ABP in the state.
He further said, “Most of these youths read agriculture, and we have engaged them as part of beneficiaries of the ABP, and they will also serve as agricultural extension agents who will guide other farmers in ideal rice production practices. We hope that other rice farmers under the programme will benefit and consequently expand their rice production.”
