Kano panel on political violence begins sitting

The Judicial Commission of Inquiry on Political Violence and Missing Persons, set up by Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf of Kano State, commenced its proceedings on Monday. 

The commission, inaugurated to investigate cases of political violence and missing persons spanning from 2015 to 2023, is chaired by Justice Zuwaira Yusuf.

During the inaugural sitting, Justice Zuwaira reiterated the commission’s mandate to investigate the prevalent cases of missing persons and to propose lasting solutions to the issues of politically motivated violence and missing children.

She emphasised that the commission would identify victims of various forms of violence associated with the 2015, 2019, and 2023 general elections and assess the resulting loss of lives and properties. 

Justice Zuwaira affirmed the commission’s commitment to ensuring that the sponsors and perpetrators of political violence are brought to justice. 

She pledged the commission’s dedication to fulfilling its mandate diligently and impartially, without succumbing to any external pressures.

She invited individuals, groups, civil society organizations, non-governmental organizations (NGOs), as well as victims and relatives of victims of political violence and missing persons to submit memoranda or petitions.
