As part of efforts to promote girl-child education, the Kano State government has introduced a summer camp for female pupils.
The state Deputy Governor and Commissioner of Education, Prof. Hafiz Abubakar, while launching the programme at Kanti Primary School in Bichi Local Government Area, said it is aimed at giving special training to female pupils during holidays to enhance their learning capacity.
The deputy governor, who lamented the backwardness of the state in  girl-child education, said the present administration is determined to reverse the trend.
He said: “A situation where girls education is terminated at primary or secondary levels need to be changed in view of societal needs for female medical doctors, teachers and other professionals.”
He charged parents and other stakeholders to rise to the challenge and support girls to pursue education at all levels.
The deputy governor said the summer camp is a joint programme of the Kano State government and Educational Support Programme of the British Government.
Earlier, Chairman of Bichi Local Government, Alhaji Sani Mukaddas, noted that the programme would  go a long way in bridging the gap between boys and girls.
