Kano housewife gets life sentence over stepchild’s death

A Kano High Court presided over by Justice Halima Sulaiman has convicted a housewife, Rukayya Abubakar, for killing her stepchild.

The court ordered the convict to spend the rest of her life in prison.

The prosecution counsel, Barrister Rabia Sa’ad, informed the court that in 2021, Rukayya threw her stepchild into a well, an action that led to his death.

According to Sa’ad, the offence that the accused committed contravened section 221 of the Penal Code.

During the trial, the prosecution counsel presented four witnesses before the court.

The defense counsel, Barrister Rilwan Muhammad, pleaded with the court to temper justice with mercy becauss the convict is a mother with many children to cater for.

Also, another housewife has been arraigned for killing her stepchild.

But the prosecution counsel Barrister Lamido Soron Dinki informed the court that the defendant had poisoned her stepchild, a baby, Naziru Ashiru, leading to his death.

According to Soron-Dinki, the offence is contrary to section 221 of the Penal Code.

The defendant denied committing the offence.

The defense counsel Barrister Samir Rabiu applied for her bail which the court granted.

The presiding judge, Justice Zuwaira Yusuf ordered that the defendant be remanded in correctional center. She also adjourned the case to March 5, 2024.
