The Kano State government will upgrade the Audu Bako College of Agriculture to a university, the state Deputy Governor, Professor Hafiz Abubakar, said.
Prof Abubakar stated this while speaking at a special award ceremony held at the college campus along Danbatta road, a statement from the deputy governor’s office, signed by his press secretary, Mallam Usman Bello, said.
He noted that since the college has gotten approval to run courses for the award of degrees in affiliation with Kano State University of Science and Technology, it will be easier for government to secure approval from the National Universities Commission NUC to convert the college to University.
Prof Abubakar added that his committee which looked into tertiary institutions in 2003, discovered that the college has all that is required in terms of courses and teachers for the NUC accreditation to become a university.
He pointed out that the study of Agriculture must be promoted at all levels, “especially at this critical time of economic depression in order to support people to become self reliant”.
The deputy governor who is also commissioner of education assured of government’s readiness to provide all the necessary supports that will help in upgrading the institution.
Earlier, the provost of the college, Musa Tukur Yakasai said the award was in recognition of contributions of the recipients not only to the college but to Kano State in particular and the country in general.
