Kano Emirship Tussle: Court Adjourns sitting till July 4

A Kano State High Court has fixed July 4, to hear applications in the ongoing emirship tussle instituted against the 15th Emir of Kano, Aminu Ado-Bayero.

The applicants, Attorney General of Kano, Speaker Kano State House of Assembly and Kano State House of Assembly, through their counsel, Ibrahim Isah-Wangida Esq, filed a motion ex parte dated May 27, 2024.

The applicants are seeking an order restraining Aminu Ado-Bayero, and four other dethroned emirs of Bichi, Rano, Gaya and Karaye from parading themselves as emirs.

The respondents are: Alhaji Aminu Ado-Bayero,(Kano Emir) Alhaji Nasiru Ado-Bayero (Bichi emir) Dr Ibrahim Abubakar ll, (emir of Karaye), Alhaji Kabiru Muhammad-Inuwa,( emir of Rano )and Alhaji Aliyu Ibrahim-Gaya,( emir of Gaya).

Others are Inspector-General of Police, Director State Security Service, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) and the Nigerian Army.

When the case came up for hearingĀ  on Tuesday, Counsel for the applicants, Eyitayo Fatogun, SAN, told the court that they were served with five processes on July 1, at about 6:30pm.

“My lord, we received the respondent’s five processes yesterday evening and we have filed all our responses,” the lawyer told the court.

He urged the court to stand down the matter to enable them serve the respondents with their responses.

Counsel for Aminu Ado Bayero, Abdul Muhammed, opposed the request and sought for an adjournment to enable them reply and file all their applications.

Justice Amina Adamu-Aliyu, adjourned the matter until July 4, 2024, for hearing of all pending applications and originating motion.

Recall that the court had on May 27, granted an order of interim injunction restraining the the 1st 2nd, 3rd, 4th & 5th respondents by themselves, servants, privies, from parading themselves as Emirs in the interest of peace in Kano.

Daily Trust reports that the State House of Assembly on May 23, passed Kano emirates council repeal bill 2024 which was immediately assented to by Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf dissolving all the four Emirate councils created by former governor Abdullahi Umar Ganduje in 2019.
