Kano election tribunal urges lawyers to behave well

The chairman of the Election Petition Tribunal in Kano state, Justice Nayai Aganaba, has appealed to lawyers that will serve at the tribunal to conduct themselves well during the exercise.

The tribunal is to handle petitions for governorship/national and state assembly in the state.

Aganaba, who inaugurated the 3-man committee comprising of himself, and two other members, Justice Ashu Augustine Ewah and Mustapha Tijjani, on Thursday assured that there would be no external influence in dispensing justice to all the election petitions before the tribunal.

He advised lawyers to always act in accordance with ethics of the profession, warning that they should avoid being carried away by emotions during proceedings.

“You should always act within the ambit of your profession. You should not deviate from the ethics of your profession,” he warned.

He appealed to lawyers to cooperate with each other and have mutual respect one another during the sessions in order to avoid unnecessary delay in the dispensation of justice.

The chairman of the Kano chapter of the Nigeria Bar Association (NBA), Musa Lawal Abdullahi, assured the tribunal of their maximum support during the proceedings and would avoid anything that would bring about unnecessary delay.

“I am assuring the tribunal that we, the lawyers in Kano, will not do anything that will derail or delay sittings of the tribunal. We are going to give our maximum support so that all the cases can be dealt with within the stipulated time,” he assured.

However, there are 33 cases before the tribunal comprising of 11 House of Representatives, and 22 State House of Assembly so far as petitions of that of the governorship election is yet to be filed before the tribunal.

The tribunal has only 180 days to attend to all election petitions brought before it by aggrieved political parties or their candidates.
