Kano court remands 6 for killing youth in herder/farmer conflict

Six people have been remanded in a correctional facility by a Kano Senior Magistrate’s Court for killing one person during a farmers and herders clash at Bagwai LGA of Kano.

The court, presided over by Talatu Makama, ordered the remand of the six defendants accused of involvement in the killing of one Shehu Abubakar, 25, during a conflict between herders and farmers in Sarkin ‘Ya community of Bagwai LGA.

The deceased was taken to Bagwai Hospital, where medical personnel confirmed him dead.

The First Information Report identified the defendants as Sani Abdullahi Sarkin ‘Ya, Ilyasu Isa, Saleh Saidu, Isyaku Yau, Rabiu Sani, Nata’ala Sani and three other individuals who were at large.

According to the prosecution, the defendants allegedly blocked a road, obstructing herders who were on their way to feed their animals.

They were accused of killing 97 cattle and causing 91 others to disappear to unknown locations.

The prosecutor stated that the value of the killed and missing cattle was estimated at N102.7 million.

Additionally, he alleged that the defendants set fire to nine Boxer motorcycles.

The prosecutor further averred that the defendants’ actions contravened sections 97, 221 and 329 of the Penal Code Law of Kano State.

After reading the FIR, the defendants pleaded not guilty to the charges.
