Kano, Argungu, Yola prepare for 2024 Polo Festivals

As the national polo tour intensifies, the northern leg is gearing up for a jam-packed schedule in September, with three marquee tournaments lined up for the third quarter of the 2024 season. Patrons, players, and polo enthusiasts are eagerly anticipating these high-profile events, which will take place across the Northwestern and Northeastern regions of Nigeria.

Polo Royals’ investigations reveal that the ancient kingdoms of Kano, Kabi, and Fombina are already buzzing with excitement as their respective tournament dates approach. These grand slam polo fiestas, known for their thrilling competition, rich cultural displays, and grandeur, are just weeks away.

According to the sport’s governing body, the hosting clubs are finalizing their tournament dates. The prestigious Argungu Polo & Cultural Festival, held at the renowned NSK Polo Resort, is expected to kick off the series of events, traditionally following the Katsina tournament.

This unique polo event, the only one in Africa that combines the sport with the celebration of Northern Nigeria’s cultural heritage, is backed by the Kebbi State government, Argungu Emirates, and a consortium of blue-chip organizations.

From the historic Kabi Kingdom in Kebbi State, the polo caravan will move to Kano for the 2024 Kano International Polo Tournament.

This tournament, held at the Usman Dantata Polo Ground, is one of the most anticipated events of the year, attracting top players from across Nigeria and abroad. The festival, a significant tourist attraction for Kano, will feature two weeks of intense competition, with glittering prizes such as the Emir of Kano Cup, Dangote Cup, MRS Cup, and the Usman Dantata Cup.

The tour will then embark on its longest journey to the high plains of the Fombina Kingdom for the Yola International Polo Tournament. Traditionally hosted in the third week of September, this eight-day event promises to be a spectacular conclusion to the northern leg of the polo tour.
