Kaduna’s JRC frowns at multiple taxation

Rising from a meeting chaired by the chairman of the Kaduna State Board Of Internal Revenue, Alhaji Ahmed Jibril, the committee comprising representatives of 23 local government areas of the state, urged the people of the state to resist any form of illegal taxation and challenge such action in the court of law.

The committee, while noting that the dwindling oil revenue has resulted in a shortfall in federal revenue allocation to states and local governments, said there was urgent need for both states and local governments to look inwards to increase their internally generated revenue in accordance with appropriate laws.

The committee urged the ministry of local government to support all the 23 local government areas in the state to set up their local government revenue committees as provided by law.

“ There is need for capacity building and training for local government revenue staff. Members of the public need to be sensitised on correct taxes to be collected through the media, seminars and workshops,’’ the committee said.

The joint revenue committee advocated the sensitisation of political office holders in the state especially the local government chairmen on the illegal taxes.
