Two out of 12 cases suspected to be meningitis have tested positive for serotype C of the meningitis in Kaduna, health officials say.

Officials began tracing contacts of people affected. Three of those affected have been picked up, said the state health commissioner Paul Dogo.

"Our Rapid Response team sits weekly to review surveillance activities and now they have been directed to meet daily,” Dogo said.

“We have also requested for vaccines to undertake reactive immunization," he said, assuring that the State government will not leave any stone unturned in ensuring that the health of its citizens are protected.”

The state government and the World Health Organisation have intensified public sensitisation on meningitis.

WHO coordinator in Kaduna, Dauda Madubu said, “The disease affects both young and old but prevalent among young children, adolescents and the elderly with commonest signs of neck stiffness and headache in addition to signs including as fever, vomiting; limb, joint, muscle pain; fast breathing and altered consciousness, delirious seizures among others.”

While he mentioned that victims of meningitis can die within 24 hours of onset or can suffer a sudden rapid deterioration of symptoms; he stressed that quick medical intervention with correct diagnosis and treatment can save lives.
