Kaduna lawmaker decries abortion among young girls

The house committee chairman on health in the Kaduna State House of Assembly, Dr. Isaac Zinkai Auta, has decried increasing cases of abortion among young girls, saying many deaths have been recorded as a result of such acts both in the state and the country at large.
Speaking at a one-day CSO/NGO forum on the revised Essential Medicine List and its Implications, Dr. Isaac who was represented by house committee chairman on information, Nuhu Goro Shadalafiya, lamented that many young girls have lost their lives in the process of trying to get rid of unwanted pregnancies the wrong way.
He advocated that all stakeholders should carry the message of safe sex to schools including primary, secondary schools, tertiary institutions as well as the communities.
“Many girls have through abortion cut off their dreams and aspirations for life.
“Our young girls must be reminded of our culture, particularly, the religions which prohibit sex before marriage, and that is why it encourages us to marry.
“If in the course of this advocacy we find a girl who is pregnant, we should let her know that it is not the end her life. There are people who passed through that stage and today they are standing tall. They delivered the baby, the baby is well taken care of while they continued their education.
“Some of such people today are renowned members of the society. Children are gifts from God and should not be thrown away. I want to encourage us not to allow those who make mistakes to die in their mistakes,” he said.
He also called for enforcement of laws that seek to punish medical practitioners and quacks who engage in abortion.
