Ewubare represented by Director and Head Legal & Investigation Zaccheaus Senbanjo at a public lecture on torture and extrajudicial killings organised by youth corps members serving in the Commission said the team was denied entry to the prisons because there was no directive from the Comptroller General.
He said if the National Assembly passed the anti-torture and NHRC amendment bills there would be no need to get formal permission from detention facilities before paying inspection visits. “These two bills will strengthen the institutional and legal capacity of the Commission to undertake independent, unannounced inspections of all detention centres in Nigeria as well as effectively providing remedies for victims of torture including prosecution and punishment of the perpetrators,” he said.
