Kaduna dissolves ex NNPC staff cooperatives, inaugurates caretaker

The Ministry of Human Services and Social Development, Kaduna state, has dissolved the retired Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC) staff Cooperatives over a long standing leadership tussle which has affected the smooth running of their activities.

The commissioner, Hajiya Rabi Salisu, while inaugurating the nine-member committee charged with overseeing the affairs of the cooperative for the next six months lamented that because of the problems in the cooperatives, many contributors have died without benefiting.

She then urged the committee members to discharge their duties diligently without fear or favour to unravel the truth and brig an end to the lingering issues.

According to her, “Based on the powers vested in me in Section 35 (a), (b), (c) and Section 37 of the Nigerian Cooperative Societies Act that Confer to take over the Management of the affairs of the Cooperative Society in dispute for a period of two years.

“Consequently, I wish to announce the dissolution of the NNPC retired staff MPCSL and RSA Cooperative Societies indefinitely and inaugurate nine-member committee to handle the affairs of the cooperative of six months from the date of the inauguration, to conclude the assignment and submit a comprehensive report to the ministry on how to move forward after six months.”

“The long-term conflict arising from the cooperatives who have the same certificate for eleven years, my predecessors have tried their best to resolve the issues but it has continued to linger. The constitution says one can only serve for two terms and the ministry has the mandate of all Cooperatives in the state.

“The past leadership has been dragging issues with the members, most of them have died without benefiting from their contributions due to the conflict and the party in power could not abide by the rules of the ministry by stepping down for an election to hold that is why we decided to inaugurate a caretaker committee to steer the affairs for the next six months.”

She said the committee’s terms of reference include, “to find out the problems and proffer solutions, conduct free and fair election, recovery of due loans, establish inventory and account of the society and revalidate the registration of cooperative, seal and bye-laws and any other recommendation(s).

Members of the committee include Dorcas Tanko and Kabir A. Tahir as Chairperson and secretary, while Loretta Marcus, Binta Aminu, Amos Aura, Moh’d Bello, Ogboke Atani, Kelvin Adamu and Martins Ayuba are members. It consists of serving and retired civil servants.
