The Department of State Services (DSS) has confirmed the arrest a former Director-General of the Labour Party’s Presidential Campaign Council, Doyin Okupe.

The spokesman of the secret police, Peter Afunanya, who confirmed his arrest to Daily Trust on Thursday, explained that Okupe was arrested at the Terminal 1 of Murtala Mohammed International Airport, Lagos.

According to the DSS’ spokesman, Okupe was on his way to London when he was intercepted at the airport, adding that his arrest was at the instance of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

“Yes, Doyin Okupe was intercepted by the DSS at Terminal 1 of Murtala Mohammed International Airport, Lagos this morning at the instance of the EFCC.

“He has long been handed over to the Commission which requested for the action. Okupe was billed to fly to London via Virgin Atlantic,” Afunanya explained.

Daily Trust recalls that a Federal High Court in Abuja had convicted Okupe, a former Special Adviser to ex-President Goodluck Jonathan on Public Affairs, over the diversion of arms funds from the Office of the National Security Adviser.

Justice Ijeoma Ojukwu held that the prosecution made out a case of money laundering against Okupe and awarded the total sum of N13m in fines against him.
