President Muhammadu Buhari has approved the appointment of Dr Gambo Gumel Aliyu as the Director-General of the National Agency for the Control of AIDS (NACA).
Dr Gambo Gumel Aliyu takes over from Dr Sani Aliyu whose tenure runs till July 2020 but resigned as DG NACA to pursue other aspirations.
A statement from NACA yesterday said the new Director General is an epidemiologist and public health specialist. He was the Country Director of the University of Maryland, Nigeria Office, and Chief of Party of the Nigeria HIV/AIDS indicator and Impact Survey (NAIIS), world’s largest population based survey on HIV/AIDS until his appointment.
Dr Aliyu attended Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, Nigeria, where he obtained Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) in 1995, and later proceeded to the University of Maryland, where he obtained a PhD in Epidemiology in 2012.
Permanent Secretary General Services, Office of Secretary of the Government of the Federation (OSGF), Olusegun Adekunle in a statement said the appointment is for an initial term of four years and takes effect from 26th of June, 2019.
