Bayelsa Queens win 2021 Aiteo Cup

Three-time Nigeria Women Premier League champions, Bayelsa Queens, have won the 2021 AITEO Cup women finals.

The ‘Restoration Girls’ thumped Robo Queens of Lagos by 4-2 at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium, Benin City, Edo State to emerge champions.

Bayelsa’s Anjor Mary, who was named the Most Valuable Player of the finals, opened the scoring in the 10th minute to score her 7th goal in the tournament.

The lead was short-lived as Robo’s Gift Monday made it 1-1 in the 18th minute with the heavens pouring heavily onto the pitch.

Bayelsa increased the tempo of the game when they realized their opponents were attacking them more and were duly rewarded with a goal just before halftime when Juliet Sunday scored to make it 2-1.

As the first half was about to end, Peace Efih increased the lead to make 3-1 to further kill any hope of a comeback from the Robo Queens.

At the restart of the encounter and with the skies fully opening up, the players from both sides continued from where they left off in the first half.

Robo’s Habeebat Akinwande, against the run of play, scored in the 54th minute to put the pressure on the girls from Bayelsa.

However,  the intended comeback from the Lagos-based club was stopped in its tracks as Bayelsa’s Joy Bokiri scored in the 64th minute to end the game 4-2.

For their efforts, Bayelsa Queens, which was founded in 2000 by former Bayelsa State governor, Diepreye Alamieyeseigha, got a N10 million while the runners up, Robo Queens were rewarded with N5 million.
