The All Progressive Congress (APC) has won all the 17 Chairmanship seats in Saturday’s local government elections in Plateau State.

Equally, the APC won all the 325 councillorship positions across the 17 local government areas.

The election result was declared by the Plateau State Independent Electoral Commission (PLASIEC) Chairman, Fabian Ntung on Sunday morning.

Meanwhile, there was lack of enthusiasm and low turnout at the polls.

This is owing to the fact that the election was without fierce contest because the main opposition party, the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) did not participate in the election due to the court of Appeal’s judgement which disqualified the party.

The court said the PDP did not follow certain procedures in conducting its earlier congress and the attendant primaries, hence giving the ruling All Progressive Congress (APC) little or no challenge.

Yet, the court has fixed November for the hearing of the PDP appeal on its disqualification, and it is uncertain what the situation would be should the PDP get a judgement in its favour, after the election has been conducted and the winners announced.

However, Plateau State Governor, Simon Lalong, has praised the electorate for their peaceful conduct and turn out to elect their representatives.

He said he was impressed with the turn out and enthusiasm in his ward and the “encouraging reports” from various parts of the state which he said indicated a peaceful exercise and the readiness of voters to choose their leaders.

He said going by the fact that PLASIEC had assured all political parties, candidates and the entire electorate of the their readiness for the exercise having planned over a long period of time and engaged all stakeholders, there was no cause for alarm.

On the significance of the elections and the security arrangements put in place, the Governor said the transition from one Local Government Administration to another is a thing that many people of Plateau have yearned for.

He said though there were concerns about security, the government took all necessary measures to ensure that the elections is conducted smoothly without any hindrance.

The Governor also urged all citizens to ignore rumours and fake news being pedelled about the elections as all parties and their supporters were given equal opportunity to participate in the process.

He assured the State that the will of the people expressed through the ballot box will be allowed to prevail as PLASIEC has given all assurances of fairness, justice and adherence to the rules of the game.
